University of Washington, Seattle, Washington, USA

Robert E. Synovec is a Professor of Chemistry at the University of Washington (UW) in Seattle WA. He obtained his PhD in 1986 from Iowa State University under the direction of Edward S. Yeung, and then joined the Faculty at UW. Synovec currently has a very active research group (see group web site at http://synoveclab.chem.washington.edu) and has graduated 22 Ph.D. students, the first in 1991.  The Synovec research group is actively involved with the Center for Process Analytical Chemistry (CPAC).  His group is involved in developing novel analytical instrumentation and methodology based upon chemical separation science, with further integration with chemometric analysis. The group is interested in investigating the basic principles of separation science, detection, and data analysis at both a fundamental and problem solving level. The group explores the following research areas: (1) Multidimensional, High Speed Gas Chromatographic Separations (eg., GCxGC) with Chemometric Analysis, and (2) Microfabricated Liquid Chromatography and Liquid-based Sensors.  Synovec has ~150 publications (including several invited manuscripts, book chapters, and reviews), and over 340 research presentations including over 100 invited lectures and invited presentations. Synovec has organized and chaired several symposia for major conferences.  The group is active in several national and international collaborations. Synovec has been an associate editor of TALANTA since 1992.  Synovec has recently been appointed to the editorial boards for J. Chromatogr. A, beginning January 2003, and Current Analytical Chemistry, beginning June 2004.   Synovec recently has had the following honors: Amersham Pharmacia Professor in Residence, Molecular Dynamics (2000), Visiting Professor, Royal Golden Jubilee Program, Chiang Mai University, Chiang Mai, Thailand (1999) and the DuPont Educational Aid Grant, DuPont (1999).
